Barcelona set sights on Man City defender as Umtiti replacement – 'astronomical fee' needed

Barcelona’s new manager Quique Setien ‘wants to bring‘ Man City centre-back Aymeric Laporte ‘to the Nou Camp‘, allege Spanish media outlet El Gol Digital.

Laporte has cemented his status as one of Europe’s best defenders since he arrived in Manchester in January 2018 from Athletic Bilbao. His form has reportedly prompted Barcelona into making him their number one target.

Samuel Umtiti has failed to convince the Barcelona hierarchy, and they want Laporte to be the man to lead their defence in the future.

However, with Laporte’s contract secured until 2025 and Manchester City devoid of any motive to sell their star defender, any deal would require an ‘astronomical fee‘ to even make City consider a deal.

It is safe to assume that El Gol Digital’s report, even if it is true, should not concern City fans. It seems unfathomable that the club would contemplate even for one second sanctioning Laporte’s departure, and we can expect to see the Frenchman marshalling City’s defence for many years to come.
