Barça almost went in front after just five minutes, when Lionel Messi fed Frenkie de Jong, but his attempt to slot the ball into the corner came back off the post.

Early in the second half, Antoine Griezmann had a gilt-edged chance to break the deadlock but Athletic goalkeeper Unai Simon made a superb save to deny him, before the rebound trickled agonisingly wide.

Simon was called into action again to tip a Pedri strike around the post a couple of minutes later, before he quickly made an even better close-range save against Sergio Busquets.

However, just before the hour mark, the goalkeeper was powerless to prevent Barça finally taking the lead, when Griezmann finished off De Jong’s low cross from the edge of the six-yard box.

A couple of minutes later it was 2-0. Jordi Alba played a dangerous cross into the box, and De Jong stooped low to head home from close range.

And before long Messi put the game beyond doubt when he ran from inside his own half and combined beautifully with De Jong before finding the bottom corner for 3-0.

The Argentine magician then added an extra layer of gloss to the performance when he tucked away Alba’s cross for 4-0 a few minutes later.

And with five minutes remaining, Griezmann thought he’d scored to complete a thorough rout, but his goal was disallowed for offside.

Nevertheless, the Blaugrana lift the Copa del Rey for the 31st time in their illustrious history.
