Barcelona are still working behind the scenes to bring in Bayer Leverkusen’s centre-back Jonathan Tah on a free transfer this summer, according to the latest update from Fichajes.

It has come to light that while talks had cooled off in recent weeks, it now appears the Catalan club have not entirely closed the door on securing the experienced defender.

The German international had already made it clear that he will not renew his contract with Leverkusen, which naturally attracted interest from several top European clubs.

Barcelona were one of the first to react, with initial reports suggesting they were confident about sealing his signing.

Sporting director Deco had even laid the early groundwork to bring the 29-year-old, which added further weight to the rumours.

Financial hurdles but interest remains strong

As it turns out, though, the story took a different turn as Barcelona once again found themselves limited by Financial Fair Play regulations.

Just last week, the club informed Tah’s agent, Pini Zahavi, that they are currently unable to move forward with the deal under the present financial circumstances. This has forced the club to take a step back, at least temporarily.

Despite this, Barcelona have not completely abandoned the idea. The strategy remains simple: use Tah’s contract situation to their advantage.

With no transfer fee required, the club believe this is a rare opportunity to sign a reliable and experienced defender without affecting their budget too heavily.

Manager Hansi Flick is known to value Tah’s profile, and although he is not directly in charge of transfers, he would certainly welcome such an addition.

Tah’s future still remains undecided, but Barcelona are expected to stay alert and prepared to act swiftly if the conditions improve.

The club is hoping to reinforce the defence with a player who brings not only experience but also calmness and strength at the back—qualities that could make a big difference next season.
