Barcelona president Joan Laporta has spoken out about the club’s pursuit of Athletic Club star Nico Williams.

It is no secret that the young forward is the top priority for Barça, and despite Athletic Club’s attempts to complicate the signing, Barcelona remain firm in their plans to go after the player.

When asked directly about the player, Laporta chose his words carefully, saying, “I won’t talk about players. I only talk about the opportunities available in the market, and there are many.”

His comments make it clear that the club wants to stay professional and respect the process, even as they work behind the scenes to secure the exciting winger.

Regarding paying Nico’s release clause, which is around €58 million plus CPI adjustments bringing it closer to €62 million, Laporta was firm: “If there is an opportunity in the market that requires paying a release clause, then Barcelona is ready to do what is necessary.”

Barcelona focused despite Athletic’s interference

Laporta did not shy away from addressing Athletic Club’s resistance. He stated calmly, “Everyone does what they think they have to do.

We are doing what Barça has to do when it comes to taking advantage of market opportunities, following what our director of football and our coach tell us.

“I respect what Athletic do, as I expect them to respect what we do.”

He also spoke about La Liga’s role in the deal and the importance of complying with financial fair play rules.

“What Barça does concerns Barça, and La Liga knows the clubs’ accounts are confidential. We are meeting all the requirements they set, ensuring we can take advantage of opportunities in the market,” Laporta explained.

When asked if Barça could end up paying the release clause as early as next week, he responded directly: “Barça is prepared to, if a market opportunity involves paying a clause, do what corresponds.”

He also addressed the scrutiny Barça often faces: “Since we are not hiding anything, let them conduct the inspection. We have no issue.”

But we do want everyone to be treated by the same standard. We feel neither harmed nor persecuted. We are focused on doing our job,” he included.
