Barcelona’s defeat to Paris Saint-Germain last night may impact the club in ways more than one.

While the elimination has already had economic ramifications, including missing out on the FIFA Club World Cup, the result may also ensure Xavi Hernandez’s departure at the end of the season.

The Spaniard had already announced his desire earlier in the year, but it was believed that he might just stay if Barcelona had qualified for the semis.

But with Barcelona knocked out, it is unlikely Xavi would reverse his decision. As such, the club must once again start their search for a new manager.

Laporta supports Rafa Marquez

While Barça have been linked with moves for various managers across Europe over the past few months, the club do have an in-house option in the form of Rafa Marquez.

The former Mexican defender has been coaching Barça Atletic for a while now. He is regarded highly by many, having played a key role in the ascension of multiple youth players, including Pau Cubarsi.

According to SPORT, Barcelona president Joan Laporta is one of the biggest supporters of Marquez, as far as Barça’s bid to find a new manager is concerned.

Laporta believes it is essential for any Barcelona coach to go through the youth teams before managing the senior side.

That was the case with past managers such as Luis Enrique and Pep Guardiola and both of them were extremely successful. On the flip side, Xavi did not go through that experience.

That is why Laporta believes Rafa Marquez could be an interesting option for Barça. The Mexican tactician is well aware of the Barça ecosystem, having played at the club and now coaching the reserve team.

Barcelona are also quite satisfied with Marquez’s performances with the subsidiary squad. It appears Marquez’s ability to get the best out of youngsters makes him the best-placed option to replace Xavi next season.
