Barcelona begin their title defence against newly-promoted Alhama on Saturday, August 30th.

Why do Barcelona have just 17 players registered?

Barcelona have been crowned Liga F champions ten times during their history.

This year when the Spanish giants look to defend their title yet again they are facing a much stiffer task.

The Catalan club has just 17 first team players registered and with the new season beginning this weekend, that isn’t going to change.

Barcelona’s troubles stem deeper than the women’s team, with the men’s side also suffering consequences.

It has been well documented that Barcelona have had to cut spending across the board due to the financial rules implemented by La Liga.

As a result of Barcelona looking to cut costs, the women’s side have struggled to spend money this summer.

The club reportedly exceeded their €91million budget by €7m last year and as a result they had to pay that money back to the Spanish league before the new season.

Barcelona women are not at fault for overspending but with the club considering both men and women’s team to be as one – the women are facing the same consequences.

Barcelona departures and arrivals

The ten-time Liga F champions have had no say as they lost some some key players this summer.

Fridolina Rolfö joined Manchester United after Euro 2025 after mutually agreeing to terminate her contract with Barcelona.

Five more players departed ahead of the new season with Jana Fernández (London City Lionesses), Ingrid Engen (Lyon), Ellie Roebuck (Aston Villa), Bruna Vilamala (América) and Martina Fernández (Everton) all leaving.

There is some good news for Barcelona though, as highly rated duo Claudia Pina and Cata Coll are both reportedly closing in on new deals with the club.

Pere Romeu has brought in just one new star ahead of the new Liga F season with Laia Aleixandri signing from Manchester City.

Can Barcelona still reign supreme?

Barcelona failed to make it three Champions League titles in a row last season.

The club fell at the final hurdle when they were shocked 1-0 by a resilient Arsenal in the final.

Despite not succeeding in Europe, Barca still proved that they are one of the best teams in the world with their dominance in every other competition.

Although they only have 17 first-team players signed on, Barcelona are still short favourites to win Liga F with betting sites.

Barcelona will feel hard done by after their near miss in the Champions League last season and they should once again go far in the competition despite the lack of players.

With Ballon d’Or winners and current favourites to win the award again this year – Aitana Bonmatí and Alexia Putellas – still in their ranks, it is impossible to underestimate Barcelona.
