These comments come on the back of a rollercoaster of a summer led by Messi’s transfer saga, when he came incredibly close to leaving the club after being here for 20 years of his life. The Argentine was on the edge of joining Manchester City, but the transfer fell through after Josep Maria Bartomeu did not let the #10 leave the club for anything less than his gargantuan €700 million release clause.

Messi finally put the rumours to bed in an interview with GOAL, where he stated that the only reason he did not drag the situation to court was because of his love for the club. Rivaldo addresses this by saying that the Argentine had a tough summer, and has not started the season brilliantly. However, El Clasico will be the perfect game for him to prove that he is still an ‘exceptional player’.
While a mammoth performance against Real Madrid will only cement his legacy as the greatest player of all time, and the best player in the world right now; an underwhelming will not dent his career, season, or even his month.
