As Barcelona look to strengthen the squad even in the midst of an economic downturn, we might see the club churn through La Liga to find low-cost options this summer.

While Barcelona have been strongly linked with a move for Aleix Garcia, another player the club are keeping an eye on is Sergi Cardona.

A left-back by trade, Cardona has been a first-team regular at Las Palmas for a few years and was critical in helping the Canaries secure promotion to La Liga last season.

Cardona has been able to replicate his consistency in La Liga as well, notably helping his team stay clear of relegation.

The Spaniard’s performances have not gone unnoticed, with Barcelona exploring a possible move for the player, in their bid to shore up their options in the left-back department.

Cardona, after all, could be an excellent replacement for Marcos Alonso, who is set to leave the club at the end of the season.

Cardona on his renewal at Las Palmas

In a recent press interaction, Cardona has admitted that he has yet to reject any renewal offer from Las Palmas so far.

“I have not rejected any renewal offer, when it is time to talk we will sit down and see what is best for me, for the club, and we will make a decision,” he said (h/t Mundo Deportivo).

This goes against the club president’s recent statement, where he suggested that Las Palmas cannot compete with the player’s demands.

Cardona’s contract in the Canary Islands expires at the end of the season, meaning he could be available for a free transfer if Las Palmas fail to tie him down to a new deal.

With Barcelona on the prowl, the coming months could be important in the context of Cardona’s future.

The Spaniard will also be in focus this weekend as the two teams take each other in Montjuic.
