With Barcelona scouring the market for a new defensive midfielder in the summer, it appears that they might be closing in on a signing already.

Guido Rodriguez deal advanced

Indeed, earlier today, reports in Spain confirmed that Real Betis midfielder Guido Rodriguez could be arriving at Barcelona in the summer transfer window.

Building on that journalist Gaston Edul has confirmed that Barcelona have indeed tabled a contract offer for the Argentine midfielder and his arrival is ‘advanced’.

Indeed, negotiations are understood to be underway between the two parties and it appears that the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner will become the first signing of the summer for the Blaugrana.

Rodriguez’s current contract with Real Betis expires at the end of the season and he has offered no indication about wanting to renew.

In fact, in an interview earlier today, the Argentine international refused to commit to the idea of signing a new contract with Los Verdiblancos, saying:

“You have to make decisions in life and well, we’ll see what happens at the end of the season. The truth is that as of today, neither I nor the club have any certainty about what might happen.”

Rodriguez has been on Barcelona’s agenda for some time now. Given his proven pedigree at the highest level and experience in La Liga, the Argentine can be a handy acquisition, especially coming in for free.

With Oriol Romeu expected to depart, the Real Betis man could be expected to fill in his place while Barça could look to add another top pivot, finances permitting.
