Although Barcelona are not participating in the FIFA Club World Cup themselves, there was a touch of extra satisfaction for Barça fans during Real Madrid’s 1-1 draw against Al-Hilal, and it came thanks to a familiar face.
Former Blaugrana defender Joao Cancelo, now playing for the Saudi side, put in a standout performance to help hold Madrid to a draw in their opening match of the tournament.
Cancelo only spent one season at Barcelona, joining on loan from Manchester City. It was a tough campaign for the team, ending trophyless and with Xavi Hernandez stepping down as manager.
But despite the difficult year, Cancelo developed a deep connection with the club and the city. His affection for Barça is clear, and he considers himself more than just a former player; he sees himself as a fan.
Speaking after the match, Cancelo did not hide where his heart lies. “I’m a Barça fan, it’s normal. I love Barça and I love Barcelona. I love the group I was with at Barça. Now I’m at Al-Hilal and I’m continuing my journey,” he told the media.
While Cancelo now wears Al-Hilal’s shirt, his loyalty to Barcelona hasn’t faded. That sentiment made his role in halting Real Madrid even sweeter for Culers watching from afar.
His defensive work and presence on the pitch were crucial in securing a draw for the Saudi team, a result that Real Madrid did not expect.
It may not count for Barcelona at all, but for the fans, seeing a self-declared Barça fan frustrate their eternal rivals on a global stage offers a small but meaningful victory.
Cancelo might be miles away from Camp Nou, but his heart remains firmly Blaugrana.
