Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr. was targeted by a small group of Barcelona fans ahead of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 second-leg match against Napoli at Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium in Montjuic.

Ahead of the match, those fans wished death upon the Real Madrid star by chanting “Vinicius, d*e!” on the outskirts of Montjuic, reports Carrusel Deportivo.

On a big night for Barcelona, fans listened to their coach Xavi and made lots of noise at Montjuic. But before the game started, some fans went too far and targeted Vinicius Jr.

They shouted bad things at him, which was certainly not what Xavi meant. This made the atmosphere tense, like a pressure cooker, and it wasn’t a good show of sportsmanship.

It has happened before

In May last year when Barcelona clinched the La Liga title from Real Madrid, celebrations broke out on the streets of Catalonia.

However, the happy atmosphere near Camp Nou stadium was spoiled by some mean people. During the celebrations, some Barcelona fans were heard chanting unpleasant things about Real Madrid star. Once again, chants of “d*e Vinicius” were heard from the streets.

Last season, La Liga received eight complaints about racist comments aimed at Vinicius, including some from Barcelona fans during a match at Camp Nou on March 19.

The Brazilian has been at the receiving end of racist abuse and hate from opponent fans in the ongoing season as well.

It is not fair or nice to say hurtful things about players from other teams, no matter the gravity of support. Everyone should remember to be respectful and kind, both on and off the field.

The fans’ passion is important, but it’s also important to show respect to the other team. Everyone should enjoy the game without crossing the line.
