The buzz around Nico Williams and his potential move to Barcelona is picking up serious momentum.

In fact, according to SPORT, several key players in the Barcelona squad are pressing the club’s management to make the transfer happen.

It is to be noted that this is the second summer in a row where the young winger has dominated transfer talk in Catalonia. This time, however, the situation is very different.

Things really escalated after a key meeting between Barça’s sporting director, Deco and Nico’s agent, Felix Tainta.

Close bond with Barcelona players

What makes the situation even more interesting is the close bond Nico shares with several players already at the club, especially Lamine Yamal and Alejandro Balde.

Both youngsters have made their feelings public, hinting openly that they want Nico at Camp Nou next season.

But it is not just about public praise. Behind the scenes, Nico has received messages from others in the dressing room too, including Pau Cubarsi, Fermin and Dani Olmo.

It is clear that the current squad has a strong preference for who they want to see joining them on the flanks.

Financial complications delaying the move

Despite the strong backing from the dressing room and interest from both manager Hansi Flick and president Joan Laporta, there is still a major obstacle to clear — money.

Nico, who scored 11 goals and seven assists during the 2024/25 season, has a €60 million release clause in his contract with Athletic Club. While Barcelona are ready to activate it, the problem lies in how the payment would be made.

Athletic Club are standing firm on their demand that the full amount be paid upfront. Barcelona, dealing with strict financial fair play rules and limited flexibility, were hoping to negotiate a payment structure with instalments.

Since that is off the table, the move has been delayed, but certainly not ruled out.

If Barcelona can unlock the financial side, the green light from the players and the management means this transfer is very much likely to happen.
