Andreas Christensen’s situation at Barcelona has changed completely. The Catalans had placed him on the transfer market due to an excess of defenders, but the exit of Inigo Martinez has now made him indispensable.

The Dane is likely to see a lot of playing time this season and has only one year left on his current contract, which expires in 2026.

Barcelona could offer Christensen a renewal

The Barcelona sporting management had not offered Christensen a renewal, expecting him to move on, but they may now propose an additional year to prevent him from leaving on a free transfer in 2026, reports SPORT.

That is the plan, although there is no rush and negotiations could begin after the transfer window closes at the end of August.

He is highly regarded by the coaching staff, and provided he remains injury-free, the 29-year-old is expected to feature heavily under Hansi Flick this season, which could increase his market value.

The sporting management has consistently stated that it is not ideal to have players in the squad with only one year left on their deals.

Christensen always wanted to stay

Christensen has always wanted to remain at Barcelona until the end of his contract, and nothing is being ruled out now.

The Danish international has refused to entertain offers this summer, despite interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia and the Premier League.

He has always believed he could be important at Barcelona, informing the club immediately after last season that he would stay regardless of circumstances.

Barcelona nearly sold Christensen in January, with Brentford submitting an offer, but he suffered another injury and ultimately stayed. He spent much of last season sidelined but is now convinced he can perform at his best after fully recovering.

Christensen is likely to have opportunities to start many matches in the upcoming season, and Barcelona are seriously considering this extension to avoid losing him for free, or even to keep him long-term if his performances are strong.
