Marc-Andre ter Stegen has dominated the Barcelona channels lately, in the wake of his back problem that required surgery.

Subsequently, the German international was ruled out for a period of up to two-three months, forcing Barcelona to put their faith in youngster Inaki Pena, who has done an excellent job so far.

Ter Stegen undergoes successful surgery

A recent report from Mundo Deportivo has offered an update on Ter Stegen’s fitness, suggesting that the German has successfully undergone surgery.

The surgery took place in France this Thursday. Ter Stegen had departed for France on Thursday morning, along with Dr Pruna, chief medical officer of the Barça first team.

Dr Pruna oversaw the entire surgery, which was done by the team of Dr Afshib Gangi, a known practitioner in the field, who most notably operated on popular Formula 1 racer Kimi Raikkonen a few years ago.

The report from MD further points out that Ter Stegen’s operation in Strasbourg, France, was done with utmost secrecy, under the order of the player himself.

That is why Barcelona have remained quiet on the subject and are yet to issue an official medical statement on the German.

MD suggests a statement might come today, but only if Ter Stegen hands his approval to the club.

In the meantime, the German is expected to kickstart his recovery process. The surgery is likely to hold him back from training at least for a few weeks. But it is quite probable that the goalkeeper might return to action in less than the given three-month timeframe.

Barcelona, for their part, are confident of having Ter Stegen back before the Champions League Round of 16 clashes in February next year.
