Eric Garcia has been a valuable asset to Barcelona in recent weeks, particularly under the guidance of Hansi Flick.

Despite being primarily known as a centre-back, Garcia has proven to be effective when deployed at right-back, a position he has embraced with remarkable results.

His recent performances have highlighted his versatility and adaptability, contributing both defensively and offensively.

Garcia’s role at right-back was thrust upon him when Jules Kounde was injured during the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Inter Milan.

With the pressure mounting, the former Manchester City player stepped in and has since provided solid performances.

In just four games as right-back this season, Garcia has scored two goals and provided one assist in a total of 252 minutes played.

His contributions have come in key matches, including three Champions League games and one La Liga fixture.

Key moments in Garcia’s right-back journey

Garcia’s debut at right-back under Flick came during a challenging match against Benfica in the Champions League. He replaced Kounde in the 74th minute, with Barcelona trailing 2-4.

In a dramatic turn, Garcia scored just three minutes later with a flawless header from a Pedri cross, bringing the score to 3-4. His impact was immediate, helping Barcelona complete an incredible comeback and secure all three points in a thrilling 5-45 victory.

In his first start at right-back, which was against Mallorca, Garcia again impressed, providing an assist and playing the full 90 minutes in a clean sheet victory.

His key pass to Dani Olmo led to the only goal of the match, which not only secured the win but also allowed Kounde some much-needed rest before the Copa del Rey final.

The toughest test

However, Garcia’s most challenging performance came in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final against Inter Milan.

After Kounde’s injury in the first leg, where the Spaniard filled in, Garcia appeared at right-back once again, but this time, Inter’s pace and attacking threats tested his defensive capabilities.

Despite Barcelona being under pressure for much of the match, Garcia showed resilience. In the second half, he even moved to a more advanced role, playing as a makeshift number 9.

His stunning volley to make it 1-2 gave Barcelona hope, and he nearly scored a second with a point-blank shot that was saved by Inter goalkeeper Sommer.
