In a recent report, Fichajes mentioned that Barcelona are showing interest in former Manchester United keeper David de Gea. It has been claimed that the Catalan club are eyeing a move for the Spanish goalie in the summer.

De Gea’s Successful Career At Manchester United

De Gea left Manchester United as a free agent last summer. The Spanish talent had a long and successful career at Old Trafford after making 545 appearances for Man United, conceding 590 goals and securing 190 clean sheets across all competitions.

The 33-year-old has got a wealth of experience at the highest level and won’t take much time to settle into life in Barcelona if Xavi decides to move in for him this year. The Madrid-born talent is a free agent at the moment and would serve as a cost-effective choice for the Catalan club to pursue at the end of this campaign.

Barca can definitely use someone with his experience to replace Marc-Andre ter Stegen if they are planning to let the German goalie leave in the summer.

Is De Gea A Good Option For Barcelona Head Coach Xavi?

De Gea is an experienced and proven custodian who can still play at a high level in the short term. He has got quick reflexes that allow him to make a few decent saves at the back and remains a solid handler of the ball. Furthermore, de Gea can even distribute the ball well from the back when he is playing with confidence on the pitch.

The Spaniard still has what it takes to serve as a safe pair of hands in top-flight football. Thus, Barcelona boss Xavi would be wise to offer him a chance to make a positive impact at the Nou Camp.

At 33, de Gea has what it takes to help the Catalan club compete across all fronts over the next couple of years. Hence, Barca should focus on signing him on a free transfer at the end of this season as he would be a decent option for them in the short term.

However, Xavi might be better off opting for a younger keeper if he wants to build a strong squad in the long run.
