Jordi Cruyff has announced his desire to leave Barcelona at the end of next month, meaning he will cease to become a sporting director for the club before the start of the new season.

Barça have already streamlined Deco as the replacement, with the Brazilian set to become the right hand man of Mateu Alemany.

However, Cruyff had confirmed that he will help Barcelona close out any ongoing operations, which could involve the signing of Lionel Messi.

But in a recent media interaction, Cruyff has not set a positive outlook over Barça’s chances of landing the superstar, suggesting there is an issue with Financial Fair Play regulations.

“There is an issue related to Messi and Fair Play,” Cruyff said (h/t Actualite Barca). This does not serve as a good omen for Barcelona, who have had to remain patient as La Liga continue to review their Financial Feasibility Plan.

The authorities were expected to approve the plans earlier in the month, but nothing has been formulated as of yet. Barcelona are relying on La Liga’s green to go after Messi and propose an official offer on the table.

It is likely that Messi will leave Paris Saint-Germain, but where remains the big question. There is no doubt that his father is attracted to a move to Saudi Arabia, especially in the midst of lucrative offers from the Saudi government.

In addition to Saudi clubs, even Premier League giants have joined the race to sign Messi ahead of the new season. The player has remained patient for now and continues to harbour hopes of a potential return to Camp Nou.

But with time running out and Barcelona facing immense pressure due to the FFP regulations, it is still uncertain whether or not the Argentine international can truly return to his former stomping ground next season.
