Welcome to the third annual edition of the Ballon dâOneFootball as we continue our countdown of the top 25 players in the world.
And today we have âŠ
(Last year: 18th)
The last 12 months have turned into something of a comeback year for Thomas MĂŒller.
Two years after being discarded from the Germany squad, Joachim Löw decided the 32-year-oldâs nous was worth something and brought the Bayern Munich star back into the fold for Euro 2020.
Although his return to Die Mannschaft didnât result in success in the summer, MĂŒller has stuck around, with Hansi Flick naming him in every one of his squads since taking over from Löw.
Itâs almost as if his talents were being under-appreciated or there was an expectance that he would decline after hitting the other side of 30.
If anything, though, MĂŒller has improved as a player since Lowâs decision back in 2019, and his club have benefitted enormously.
Bayernâs no.13 taught us all what a âRaumdeuterâ was when he broke on to the scene but there is so much more to his game in the current day.
MĂŒller has become the complete number 10, an expert in laying the ball on the plate for his teammates while also possessing the poacherâs instinct of the best centre-forwards.
Over the past year he has provided 32 assists while also chipping in with 13 goals, remarkable numbers from a footballer who is always alive in a game.
There have been comments over MĂŒllerâs unusual style made in the past, and the German does almost look gangly and awkward, but that is part of his charm.
A man who doesnât look like your typical professional footballer instead possesses all the attributes to rub shoulders with the crĂšme de la crĂšme.
MĂŒller fully deserves to be considered amongst the best 15 players in the world.
