In the build-up to Saturday’s World Cup clash with France, England will have spent countless hours working out how to combat the threat of Kylian Mbappé, Olivier Giroud and Antoine Griezmann.
But perhaps they forgot about Aurelien Tchouaméni.
It was the Real Madrid midfielder who found himself with more than a yard of space in the 17th minute at Al Bayt Stadium, and he made England pay with a stunning strike from distance which goalkeeper Jordan Pickford could only grasp at as it flew past him into the net.
It was the 22-year-old’s first World Cup goal, and what a way to open his account.
