The match began slowly with both teams looking for openings. In the 5th minute, Georgios Masouras had the first chance for the hosts, but his header went wide. Augsburg then drew first blood in the 16th minute as Samuel Essende turned swiftly in the box to fire a shot that deflected off Bernardo, leaving Timo Horn helpless. Finn Dahmen was then called into action a couple of times to keep his side in front, including a spectacular save from Ibrahima Sissoko. Kristijan Jakić almost made it 2-0 just before the break, but his effort was cleared off the line.

The second half saw Bochum come out with renewed vigour. Their persistence paid off on the hour mark when Philipp Hofmann levelled the score. The striker met a cross from Felix Passlack with a powerful header. Dahmen initially tipped the ball onto the bar, but it unfortunately rebounded off his head and into the net. This equalizer ignited Bochum's hopes and they began to lay siege to the Augsburg goal. Hofmann continued to be a threat, forcing another save from Dahmen in the 84th minute.
The match took another dramatic turn in the 81st minute when Augsburg's Arne Maier received a straight red card. Initially shown a yellow for a challenge on Bernardo, the referee upgraded it to a red after a VAR review, deeming it a reckless tackle on Bernardo's shin. With the numerical advantage, Bochum pressed hard for a winner, creating a flurry of chances. However, Augsburg's defence, marshalled by the exceptional Dahmen, held firm under intense pressure.
Just as it seemed Bochum might snatch a late winner, Augsburg delivered a sucker punch in the 90th minute. Against all odds, Mert Kömür found himself with space in the box after a pass from Phillip Tietz. Kömür calmly slotted home from the edge of the box to give the ten-man Augsburg an unlikely victory. The goal silenced the home crowd and sparked wild celebrations among the Augsburg players and staff.
Dahmen emerged as the hero for Augsburg with a series of crucial saves throughout the match. The goalkeeper's standout performance was particularly evident in the second half when Bochum dominated proceedings. Dahmen's reflexes and positioning were tested repeatedly, but he stood firm, making several spectacular saves to keep his team in the game. His ability to organize the defence and command his area, especially after Augsburg were reduced to ten men, was instrumental in securing the victory.
