From coaching Unterhaching in the Regionalliga Bayern, to being Nagelsmann's assistant coach at Germany's home EUROS, to now being the headcoach of a Bundesliga club: Sandro Wagner is Augsburg's official coach for the 2025/26 season!
“We are delighted that in Sandro Wagner we have been able to recruit a head coach for our FCA who lives and breathes football. Sandro is highly ambitious and clearly committed to the direction of our FCA. In his previous positions, he has already proven that he can make teams better and develop players. Sandro is very meticulous and can also get to grips with a team with his emotions. We are looking forward to working with him”, said Augsburg's CEO Michael Ströll.
Wagner follows in the footsteps of the Danish manager Jess Thorup, who was dismissed by Augsburg at the end of the 2024/25 season. The German has high ambitions for himself and his new club:
“It was my goal to work as a head coach in the Bundesliga myself. The talks convinced me that the job at FC Augsburg was exactly the right step. FCA has a clear philosophy that fits in very well with my idea of the game. I am a young coach who wants to develop together with the club. The conditions for this are excellent in Augsburg. Like me, FCA is very ambitious and has good structures and a great environment. The team has great potential and I'm really looking forward to working with them.”
The 37-year-old Wagner is now the 2nd youngest manager in the league, right behind Merlin Polzin (34) from the newly promoted HSV. Köln, Wolfsburg and Leipzig are all yet to present a headcoach for the upcoming season.
