Though they kept yet another clean sheet on Thursday, Arsenal couldn’t find the goal they needed to come away from their clash with Crystal Palace with three points.

Up next are Newcastle United, and though Mikel Arteta’s side beat Steve Bruce’s just last week, they needed extra time to do so. This time around in the Premier League, they won’t have that luxury.

Goalkeeper

Despite having no competition for his spot right now, Bernd Leno is still playing as well as he ever has for Arsenal. He’s on the back of four clean sheets, including one against the Gunners’ opponents on Monday. He’ll start.

Defence

Until we know the results of the scans on Kieran Tierney, we have to assume he’s going to miss this match. Unfortunately, Ainsley Maitland-Niles did not prove a capable left-back deputy on Thursday.

As painful as it is to lose Bukayo Saka from the right-wing position, he’s now Arsenal’s best option at left-back. The Gunners have alternative options on the wings, from Nicolas Pepe to Willian, Reiss Nelson, and Gabriel Martinelli.

Gabriel Magalhaes should get a chance to return to the starting lineup after making the bench on Thursday. He can reestablish his centre-back partnership with Rob Holding. Hector Bellerin is likely to keep his place at right-back.

Granit Xhaka will probably keep his place, but Thomas Partey should come back into the side alongside him. Perhaps Partey wasn’t ready for a start on Thursday, but he got half an hour to get him up to speed.

Emile Smith Rowe has to start ahead of the two of them, as long as he’s fit. He’s one of few midfielders in this Arsenal squad capable of making something happen in front of goal.

That leaves Dani Ceballos, Mohamed Elneny, and Joe Willock on the bench.

Alexandre Lacazette will probably keep his place up front, despite failing to get into the game much against Crystal Palace. He’s still Arsenal’s top scorer and in good recent form before Thursday.

We’re going for a rather controversial pick on the left, with Gabriel Martinelli replacing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. As much as Aubameyang needs to get a run of goals going, he also needs a rest, fading badly against Palace after 120 minutes vs Newcastle.

On the right, it has to be Nicolas Pepe. Arsenal’s recent success has come from overlapping full-backs and wingers that cut inside, so if Saka isn’t available to play the role, Pepe is the obvious alternative, not Willian.
