Atletico Madrid have registered their interest in signing Boca Juniors striker Mateo Retegui, who made his debut with Italy recently.

The 23-year-old made the headlines after scoring in his first two appearances for Italy against England and Malta in the European Championship qualifiers.

The lead-up to his maiden call-up was his stellar loan spell at Argentine outfit Tigre, amassing 29 goals in 51 appearances.

His form has been outstanding since the turn of the year, with the forward netting eight times in all competitions.

Retegui has subsequently courted interest from European heavyweights, with Atletico among them.

As reported by journalist Nicolo Schira, Atletico scouted the former Argentine youth international alongside Inter Milan’s vice sports director Dario Baccini during the game against Malta, with the Nerazzurri also keen on his services.

Schira adds that Bundesliga giants Eintracht Frankfurt have also joined the race for Retegui.

The Eagles could be looking at Retegui as a potential replacement for Rafael Santos Borre and Randal Kolo Muani, who have both been linked with an exit in the summer.

Atletico are looking to strengthen their attack in the summer as they expect Chelsea to sign Joao Felix permanently.

Alvaro Morata has also been a subject of transfer interest from AC Milan lately, with the Rossoneri identifying him as a top striker target for the summer.

Retegui could be an excellent upgrade for Los Rojiblancos if Morata leaves the capital giants in the summer.

However, Atletico will face tough competition from Inter, who have earmarked Retegui as a replacement for exit-linked Romelu Lukaku.

The Italian youngster’s father and agent, Carlos, recently commented on the exit speculation, stating that Retegui has no intention of leaving.

Tigre are expected to trigger the buy-out clause of Retegui from Boca, who have reserved 50% of a future sale.
