Atletico Madrid reach verbal agreement with midfield target Cardoso | OneFootball

Atletico Madrid have made a breakthrough in their pursuit of Real Betis midfielder Johnny Cardoso after agreeing personal terms with him.

Marca claims United States midfielder has given the green light to a five-year contract with Atletico until 2030.

Los Rojiblancos identified Cardoso as their top target to reinforce the midfield after withdrawing their interest in Arsenal’s Thomas Partey.

However, the Spanish giants are unlikely to sign the promising La Liga midfielder before the Club World Cup as they have yet to hold concrete talks with Betis.

The 23-year-old has a release clause worth €80 million in his contract, which runs until 2030. However, the fee can be significantly lowered.

Tottenham Hotspur have a preferential option to sign Cardoso for €25m for a certain period in this summer window, but he wants to join Atletico.

Cardoso has become a key part of Betis’ engine room, making 46 appearances in all competitions.

The defensive midfielder was instrumental in Betis reaching the Europa Conference League final.

Cardoso could be a long-term successor to Atletico legend Koke, who is in the twilight of his career.

Atletico are also in talks to sign Villarreal star Alex Baena, who would bring more creativity to their midfield.

The Spaniard is also determined to move to Atletico, who have offered Villarreal €30 million and Rodrigo Riquelme as a makeweight in the deal.

The 23-year-old playmaker has racked up seven goals and ten assists this season, helping Villarreal qualify for the Champions League.
