Atletico Madrid will look to rebuild their defence this summer, and that could involve a number of changes. Most of those are expected in central defence, but it appears they are looking to add a right-back too, with Thomas Meunier back on their radar.
The 32-year-old Belgian is currently at Trabzonspor after signing an 18-month deal in January from Borussia Dortmund. Meunier could have joined Atletico before he went to Dortmund, as he has declared in the past, and Relevo say that they would be keen on a move again.
Presumably he would be a cut-price move from the Turkish giants, given his age and contract situation. The intention would be to provide competition for Nahuel Molina. This season Cesar Azpilicueta, Marcos Llorente and Rodrigo Riquelme have all played there in a poor season for the Argentine. Meunier’s defensive capabilities have been questioned in the past, but as a wing-back he’s usually been effective.
It would be a contradiction of the reported revolution Atletico are to undertake this summer though, which promised younger recruits and investment in the backline, with Meunier representing a short-term fix.
