Manchester City have agreed to sell Julian Alvarez.
The breaking news on BBC Sport (see below) saying that Atletico Madrid has had an £81.5m deal accepted.
Julian Alvarez off to La Liga for the 2024/25 season.
This though surely begs the question, if Julian Alvarez is worth £81.5m, what does that say about a valuation for Alexander Isak?
A 22-year-old Julian Alvarez was bought for £14m by Manchester City from River Plate on 7 July 2022, exactly seven weeks before Newcastle United paid £63m to sign Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad on 25 August 2022.
Julian Alvarez:
Total of 67 Premier League appearances (44 starts and 23 off the bench).
Total of 4,109 Premier League minutes played.
Total of 20 Premier League goals scored at an average of one every 207 PL minutes.
Alexander Isak:
Total of 52 Premier League appearances (44 starts and 8 off the bench).
Total of 3,794 Premier League minutes played.
Total of 31 Premier League goals scored at an average of one every 122 PL minutes.
I think Julian Alvarez is a good player and I wouldn’t have complained if Newcastle United had bought him, however, he is nowhere near the levels of Alexander Isak, in my opinion.
The truth is of course, players who can score goals are always going to be sought after. Players who can score a lot of goals are going to be the very most sought after.
Which makes me laugh when this summer for example, you have clowns in the media and in the fanbases of clubs such as Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and so on, who have talked about one or more of these clubs buying Alexander Isak for something like £70m or £80m.
Quite unbelievable.
For starters, Isak cost £63m as a 22 year old, so selling your best goalscorer and arguably best player for £7m to £17m profit after developing him into one of the best strikers in the Premier League and indeed the world, yes, that is going to happen, not!!
So many football fans, many Newcastle United ones included, have a habit of putting unrealistic high price tags on their own players and then unrealistic low ones on those you would like NUFC to sign, as it makes it sound more likely/believable.
These fans of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and so on, thinking they could get Alexander Isak for £80m or less, when the reality is of course, it would need a new Premier League record if Newcastle United did ever sell Isak.
This of course just sums up how important Alexander Isak is to Newcastle United and what a brilliant signing he was as a 22 year old, even at £63m.
‘Atletico Madrid have agreed an £81.5m deal to sign Manchester City forward Julian Alvarez.
The fee is made up of an initial £64.4m (75m euros) with a further £17.1m (20m euros) in potential add-ons.
It would be a record sale for City, surpassing the £50m Chelsea paid for Raheem Sterling in 2022.
