Luis Suarez was a hero at Liverpool.

The Uruguayan striker adhered himself to Kopites with his passion and desire to win every single match. He was pretty good too.

Suarez scored 82 goals in 133 appearances in all competitions and his incredible 2013/14 campaign also led Liverpool to Premier League glory.

But it wasn’t to be and Suarez ended the season in tears after his side’s collapse against Crystal Palace in their penultimate match.

However, since leaving, Suarez has gone down in the estimations of Liverpool fans.

His behaviour during Liverpool and Barcelona’s two-legged Champions League semi-final in 2018 was criticised by many.

He opened the scoring in the first leg and celebrated wildly. That’s understandable. But he was up to his usual tricks and clashed by the Liverpool defenders throughout - most notable Andy Robertson. He then celebrated in Robertson’s face after Lionel Messi had made it 3-0.

In the second leg, he then kicked out at the Liverpool left-back causing him to go off at half-time. Inadvertently, Georginio Wijnaldum came on in Robertson’s place and we all know what happened next.

That was the last time Suarez faced Liverpool.

On Tuesday, though, he faced the Reds yet again.

Suarez was named on the substitutes bench for Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night as Liverpool travelled to Madrid.

However, with 10 minutes remaining, Suarez was introduced as Atleti went in search of an equaliser.

While he didn’t achieve that, he was involved in controversy deep into injury-time.

He challenged Virgil van Dijk but leant into the Dutchman, who had jumped early to win the header. It's a tactic we've seen Tottenham's Harry Kane perform in recent years.

It resulted in the defender catching Suarez in the head with an elbow. Unsurprisingly, Suarez went rolling around on the ground.

Then, when the ball next went out of play, he confronted referee Daniel Siebert and was booked for his protestations.

Check out the reaction from Liverpool who loved Van Dijk getting one over Suarez, who they accused of doing a 'Harry Kane':

After the match, manager Jurgen Klopp admitted it was a “dirty” three points.

“The dirty points are often the most important, and they were dirty tonight,” he said. “That wasn’t our best football but it was an important step.”

Liverpool are now in control of Group B with three wins from three. They’re five points clear of both Atleti and Porto, while AC Milan are still pointless.
