An insight into the bizarre reasoning behind the recent surgical procedure undergone by Athletic Club star Iñaki Williams has today been provided.

Attacker Williams, for his part, will play no part in Athletic’s final outing of the season, this weekend, against Rayo Vallecano.

This comes after Los Leones announced earlier this week that the 29-year-old had been forced under the knife, to resolve a painful issue with a scar on his left foot.

Little was initially made of the situation, but on Friday, Ernesto Valverde has opened up on just how long Williams has in fact been dealing with the discomfort.

Speaking in an interview with Lezama, as cited by Mundo Deportivo, Athletic’s head coach explained that, a full two years ago, his attacking star suffered a deep wound in the sole of his left foot.

This came after Williams stood on a piece of glass whilst on vacation.

After the same area became increasingly tender and painful over the course of recent weeks, the Ghanaian international, in turn, underwent a medical scan.

And, incredibly, as much revealed that, for the last two years, Williams had been playing with a 2cm-long piece of glass lodged inside his foot:

“After the [Copa del Rey] final he had an MRI and he still had glass stuck inside the sole of his foot because when they sewed him up they left the glass inside,” Valverde began. “Furthermore, it is not a small crystal, it was two centimeters long and it was approaching a tendon. The doctor and I started laughing because we didn’t believe it, this was a month ago and they had to remove it.”

The Athletic boss concluded:

“It’s amazing, but that’s how it is!”
