Gianluca Scamacca and Giorgio Scalvini will both need to undergo surgery to treat their respective injuries, meaning Atalanta will lose them for the rest of the season.

The duo’s campaign has been plagued by injuries, as both suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in recent months.

Scamacca and Scalvini to miss the remainder of Atalanta season due to surgery

While the defender returned to action in November after completing a surprisingly quick recovery, he recently sustained two shoulder injuries in the space of a few weeks, the last of which will force him to undergo an operation.

On the other hand, the striker played his first and only five minutes of the season in Atalanta’s last Serie A game against Torino, which was enough to pick up a new quadriceps issue that proved to be more serious than expected.

Speaking before La Dea’s 1-0 defeat in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals at the hands of Bologna, Luca Percassi confirmed that the two players will receive an operation.

“They will undergo surgery, and it’s obviously a great disappointment for us because we’re losing two players for a long period who would have been of great help and didn’t deserve these two setbacks,” Percassi said, as reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“They will come back stronger than before, and we’re waiting for them, even though we won’t have them back until next year.”

Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini will also have to do without the injured Ademola Lookman in the next few weeks and lost Nicolò Zaniolo, who was sold to Fiorentina, although the club replaced him by signing Daniel Maldini from Monza.
