Manchester United defensive target, Giorgio Scalvini, will be sold early in the coming summer transfer window as Atalanta want to avoid a sale in August.

The Red Devils have had major issues in their defence all season.

They have conceded an embarrassing amount of goals at home and abroad and are far too easy to cut open, as no team in Europe’s top five leagues has conceded more shots than the Manchester outfit in 2024.

The defence has also suffered an horrendous number of injuries with only full back, Diogo Dalot, being available for most matches of the campaign.

As a result, numerous defenders have large question marks over their heads and United have been linked to players such as Jarrad Branthwaite, Gleison Bremer and Jean-Clair Todibo.

Whilst the rumours have died down a little as of late, Scalvini was linked to the club extensively a few months ago and United have been given a boost in their pursuit of him.

It was reported back in January that United were “ahead of the competition” and were happy to pursue a deal for the Italian defender in spite of his “hefty” price tag.

It was also reported last month that the defender was likely to leave Serie A this summer and that United would face serious competition from both Manchester City and Chelsea for the talented youngster.

Tuttomercatoweb have also now claimed that the player is for sale but will need to leave sooner rather than later in the upcoming window.

Commenting on Atalanta’s summer plans the outlet states, “the intention is to not sell all the jewels, i.e. Koopmeiners, Ederson and Scalvini, but it will depend a lot on the offers that arrive. €50 million is the starting price, knowing however that it won’t arrive in August: in that case there won’t be a transfer because it would be necessary to evaluate a replacement and with little time available the valuations would all rise. Scalvini’s included”.

The outlet also corroborates with earlier reports that due to the player’s price, his future seems to be out of Italy.

“He seems destined to go abroad, although Juventus, Napoli and Inter are interested in him”.

The player’s agent has described the defender as “a player of great substance, he is in all respects a starter for Atalanta and is part of the national team. Everyone is paying attention to him, we’ll see what to do. He has already demonstrated that he is a potential champion”.

The official arrival of technical director Jason Wilcox last night should aid United make key decisions in the transfer window with Omar Berrada also set to be in place by the summer. The absence of the future sporting director, Dan Ashworth, is problematic but hopefully the Red Devils can begin their summer plans in earnest now Wilcox is on board.
