Aston Villa forward Alisha Lehmann will not feature for Switzerland at this summer’s UEFA Women’s EURO with the player opting to take a step back from international football.

The 23-year-old would have been part of Swiss head coach Nils Nielsen’s final squad for the tournament but Lehmann has made a personal decision not to make herself available for selection.

The Swiss Football Association announced the news via a post on their official website earlier today.

Speaking after informing her national Football Association of her decision, Lehmann said “It’s a personal decision. I don’t feel mentally ready for a European tournament.”

Lehmann has scored six goals in 33 appearances for the Swiss national team to date. Head coach Nielsen has insisted that Lehmann’s decision not to play at the EUROs will not impact future selection and that the door remains open for all players, providing that they are in the right frame of mind to represent their country.

Switzerland have been drawn in a tough group for this summer’s UEFA Women’s EURO. Nielsen’s side will face reigning champions The Netherlands, Sweden and Portugal in Group C. The nation made their UEFA Women’s EURO debut in The Netherlands five years ago but were eliminated in the group stage after winning one, losing one and drawing one of their three matches.
