Thomas Tuchel asked for England to play more aggressively and to come with an effort seeking to win rather than avoid losing. The Aston Villa players on the Three Lions side did just that. Although none of the AVFC men made it on the scoresheet, they provided the needed spark that the German manager asked of his squad.
In truth, either Ezri Konsa or Morgan Rogers could have scored against Latvia. Instead, it was Harry Kane, Reece James, and Eberechi Eze who found the back of the net in the 3-0 win. The second goal in particular highlighted the efforts from the selected AVFC members.
Rogers and Rashford played a key part in the quick passing attack down the right-hand side that eventually found Declan Rice, who picked out Kane for the tap-in. Throughout the fixture, the Villa attackers took the demands of Tuchel to heart. The Latvian defenders constantly had to deal with those two, and it was them often spearheading the final third efforts.
When the likes of Jude Bellingham were the ones creating chances, Rogers in particular was excellent in positioning himself to get a shot off from defelctions, often going out for corners. The same could be said of Konsa, who had a brief instance with a Latvian member after being stepped on that required further attention. He was fine from there and realistically was unlucky to not have seen one of his attempts get past Krisjanis Zviedris on the evening.
Even if their direct involvements did not lead to a goal, Tuchel will be pleased with how the Villa players did in their starting roles. The willingness to attack and more daring approach, compared to how England looked against Albania, will be a sign of encouragement for the German manager.
