Aston Villa could look to complete a ‘surprising’ deal ahead of the winter window slamming shut at Villa Park, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has told GiveMeSport.

Having been appointed as the Villans’ head coach in October, Unai Emery may bolster his squad with the deadline just days away.

Aston Villa transfer news – January targets

According to Football Insider, Villa have set their sights on signing Marseille central midfielder Matteo Guendouzi.

The report suggests the former Arsenal man, who is valued at £30million, has been identified as one of Emery’s top targets.

Alex Crook, the respected talkSPORT reporter, recently told GiveMeSport that Guendouzi would be keen to complete a switch back to England.

Hakim Ziyech is another name on Villa’s radar, but it may be difficult to strike a deal as Chelsea would rather sell the winger to Italian giants Roma instead of a Premier League rival.

Meanwhile, the Midlands outfit have opened talks with the representatives of Moussa Dembele, who has entered the final six months of his £52,000-per-week contract at Lyon.

What has Fabrizio Romano said about Villa?

Romano has refused to rule out the possibility of Villa dipping back into the transfer market ahead of the fast-approaching deadline.

The reliable journalist is confident the hierarchy will support Emery if he is desperate to welcome further reinforcements to the club.

Romano told GiveMeSport: “Let’s see if Aston Villa will go for something surprising. I’m sure they will try to back Unai Emery.”

What business has Villa done so far?

Villa forked out £13.3million, according to Sky Sports, to complete the acquisition of left-back Alex Moreno from La Liga side Real Betis.

Emery has also bolstered his attacking options by sealing Jhon Duran’s £18million arrival from Major League Soccer franchise Chicago Fire.

The Colombian will help to plug the gap left by Danny Ings, who headed to West Ham United in a £15million switch earlier this month.

Frederic Guilbert linked up with Strasbourg just a matter of days after it emerged his Villa contract was set to be ripped up.

Morgan Sanson has headed to the same French club on loan, while Cameron Archer will spend the remainder of the campaign with Middlesbrough and Jan Bednarek has returned to Southampton.

Villa have averaged 1.78 points-per-game since Emery moved into the Villa dugout, but further reinforcements could help his side challenge for a European qualification spot just a matter of months after struggling under Steven Gerrard’s guidance.
