Everton defender Ashley Young has urged the club faithful to exercise patience with the team following their abysmal start to the season.

Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at Goodison Park means the Toffees are still searching for their first win of the 2023/24 Premier League campaign.

Sean Dyche oversaw a narrow relegation escape last season, leaving fans optimistic that the new season could bear better fortunes for the Merseyside club.

However, it hasn’t panned out how they would’ve expected, with Everton picking up just one point from their opening five games courtesy of a 2-2 draw with newly promoted Sheffield United before the international break.

The defeat to Arsenal was Everton’s fourth, which leaves them languishing in the relegation zone. Young has urged the fans to rally behind the team as they navigate a turbulent period.

“We are a few games in — if we were down the back end of the season, then we would be questioning things,” Young said (via The Athletic).

“There are plenty of games and plenty of points to play for. We have to take the positives out of the games, creating chances like we have done, and on different days, we would have more points on the board.”

Asked if he had a message for the fans, Young added: “Stay with us. Keep backing us like they are like they do.

“Everton fans are fantastic week in, week out, whether we are at home or away. It is down to us as players on the pitch to go and keep them coming back and put points on the board.”

Everton’s only victory this season came in a narrow League Cup second-round success over League Two side Doncaster Rovers.

The Toffees travel to London next weekend to face Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium before facing Aston Villa in the third round of the League Cup.
