Roma travel to Reggio Emilia to take on Sassuolo for Matchday 14 in Serie A.
The two sides are coming off late league victories last weekend but the visitors sputtered in their midweek Europa League fixture against Servette—-drawing 2-2 and likely finishing second to Slavia Praha in Group G.
Kick-off is scheduled for 18.00 CET at the Mapei Stadium.
The hosts will look to build on their last-gasp 4-3 victory over Empoli last weekend—which snapped their six match winless drought. Domenico Berardi scored his 7th goal of the season in extra time and earned his side their first win since 27 September.
The match perfectly embodied the Neroverdi’s strengths and weaknesses this season. They’ve had no issues finding the back of the net but their defence is tied for third-worst in all of Serie A with 24 goals conceded through 13 rounds.
Left back Matías Viña, who joined Sassuolo on loan from Roma in July, is expected to start against his parent side.
The Giallorossi face a must-win on Sunday evening to keep pace with their top four ambitions. With Napoli hosting league leaders Inter on Sunday, Jose Mourinho’s side has a chance to draw level with the Partenopei on points should they fall to the Nerazzurri.
However, it will be far from easy for the Giallorossi, who have won only one of their last 10 Serie A away fixtures and have failed to score in the last two. They’ve also struggled against Sassuolo in recent seasons. In their last ten meetings, Roma have an underwhelming record of 3W, 5D, and 2L—-their last win occurring in September 2021.
Very few surprises are expected from Mourinho, who’s expected to make only one or two changes from his team that won last weekend against Udinese. Nicola Zalewski will likely give Leonardo Spinazzola a chance to rest.
