AS Roma manager Tiago Pinto has offered an update on the future of Chris Smalling, whose contract at Stadio Olimpico expires next summer.

Speaking in a press conference, Pinto touched on various topics, including the speculation surrounding the English defender.

Giallorossi have been locked in talks to extend Smalling’s contract, who is having second thoughts about his future with the capital club.

Roma have tabled a two-year deal on reduced terms, while they also have the option to extend his contract for another season beyond the summer.

However, the 33-year-old is dissatisfied with the offer, with reports emerging that Inter Milan want to sign him on a free transfer.

The Nerazzurri have lined up Smalling as one of their top defensive targets, with Milan Skriniar set to join Paris Saint-Germain and Stefan de Vrij’s future up in the air.

Pinto has said that the club are in continuous contact with Smalling’s agent to negotiate the renewal but insisted that the final decision rests with the player.

“Smalling has time until May to decide what to do next with his career,” Pinto said (h/t Roma Press).

“We are in contact with Smalling’s agent to continue together, but I think everyone understands that the window is closed today and we have time to sort things out, without forgetting that it’s the player’s word.

“It’s not just our responsibility – everyone was clear because the idea is to continue together, let’s see what happens.”

Pinto also confirmed the talks with Chelsea star Hakim Ziyech during the January transfer window.

The Moroccan was identified as a replacement for Nicolo Zaniolo – who recently joined Galatasaray – but a deal failed to materialise.
