Mikel Arteta gave an update on the fitness of Leandro Trossard following Arsenal’s narrow 1-0 defeat to Tottenham in the first overseas North London derby on Thursday. The Belgian came on as a second half substitute but was unable to make a meaningful impact before being forced off with a muscle injury.
Trossard initially replaced Gabriel Martinelli in the 68th minute but was himself substituted just 17 minutes later after a collision with an opposition player. Reiss Nelson was brought on in his place, but it was too late to change the outcome as Spurs claimed the bragging rights in Hong Kong.
In his Arsenal post-match press conference, Mikel Arteta explained what led to the injury:
“He felt a little tweak, I think he tried to turn and he was pushed and he felt something muscular so we’ll have to assess him.”
Fans will be hoping the injury is not serious, particularly as it could impact the club’s plans involving the Belgian international. Arsenal are reportedly willing to retain Trossard and have even initiated talks over a new contract. However, the player continues to stall on an extension while evaluating his position at the club.
With Arsenal’s pursuit of Eberechi Eze ongoing, Trossard could potentially be sold to help fund a deal. Trossard is understood to have changed representatives earlier this summer.

In other injury news from the Spurs match, Arteta also commented on the absence of Kepa Arrizabalaga. The Spaniard had featured in the previous two pre-season fixtures but was not included in the matchday squad for this game.
Arteta said: “He felt something as well in the game against Newcastle. I think it’s a matter of days probably – if that was the Premier League he could have played but we decided not to take a risk.”
