Mikel Arteta says that Arsenal could to look to sign another player in the transfer window as Gabriel Jesus’ injury has left their squad looking “a little bit short”.

The Brazilian forward didn’t travel with the squad to Villa Park for Saturday’s 2-0 win over Unai Emery’s Aston Villa after picking up a groin injury this week.

Eddie Nketiah was an unused substitute, but could leave the club before deadline day on 30 August. His exit would mean there would be no natural replacement at centre-forward for Kai Havertz.

The Gunners have previously been linked with Ivan Toney and Victor Osimhen, although it seems unlikely they will spend the money required to sign either attacker. Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino is expected to join the club this week.

Arteta on possible transfer activity for Arsenal:

“We are really happy with the squad,” Arteta told Sky Sports. “It’s true we had an injury with Gabriel Jesus and we missed him. We are a little bit short and if we can do something then we will do it.

“I was watching the games today and every game is a big fight, the standard of the league has gone to another level again with the level of coaches. We have two from two and we’ll concentrate on Brighton.”

Arsenal sit on six points after beating Villa thanks to second-half goals from impact substitute Leandro Trossard and midfielder Thomas Partey.

The north London outfit are one of three teams, along with Manchester City and Brighton, boasting a 100 percent record after winning both of their opening two matches in the Premier League.
