Arsenal ‘reach agreement’ to terminate Ozil deal | OneFootball

Arsenal have reportedly reached an agreement to terminate Mesut Ozil’s contract at the club, in order to put an end to the ongoing saga surrounding the former Germany international.

The 32-year-old arrived at the Emirates to much fanfare back in 2013 and quickly became a key player for the club over the coming seasons, forging an exciting attacking unit alongside the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud.

Towards the end of Arsene Wenger’s reign at the club, however, his performances levels began to drop as he began to struggle with injury while there were increased question marks about the midfielders work rate. Yet, in a bid to prevent their losing their asset on a free that summer, Arsenal opted to hand him a new three-year-deal in January 2018, making him the highest-paid player in the club’s history.

Under Unai Emery, Ozil’s influence and game time began to dwindle, with Emery’s successor Mikel Arteta also opting to cast aside the once key man.

This season, in particular, has been deeply frustrating and somewhat embarrassing for the player, after being left out of both the Gunners Premier League and Europa League squads. A poor run of form for the club had led to calls he should be brought in from the cold in January, although a recent upturn in results has put an end to any such talk.

With just six months left on his current contract, it looks as if Ozil has played his last game for the club, The Athletic reporting that the Gunners are set to terminate his current deal to allow him to leave for free this month.

The former Real Madrid man has recently talked up his love for Turkish side Fenerbache, and the report claims that Arsenal have reached an agreement with the player in order to allow him to leave now rather than the end of the season, in order to avoid paying Ozil’s £350,000-a-week wage for the remainder of the campaign.

While it would bring an end to this long, drawn-out transfer saga, it would no doubt be a sad end to his spell at the Emirates, with his last game having come back in March 2020.
