Piero Hincapie’s Arsenal shirt number has been confirmed following the announcement of his Deadline Day transfer.

Initially, Hincapie joins Arsenal from Bayer Leverkusen on a season long-loan deal. As part of the agreement, there is an option of a permanent deal for £45million next summer.

The Ecuador international will further bolster the Gunners’ defensive options which already includes William Saliba, Gabriel, Cristhian Mosquera, Riccardo Calafiori, Ben White and Jurrien Timber.

It has also been confirmed that Hincapie will wear the No5 shirt at the Emirates Stadium. This shirt number has been vacant for a short period of time as Thomas Partey departed on a free transfer at the end of June.

Sokratis, Gabriel Paulista, Thomas Vermaelen, Kolo Toure and Martin Keown are among the previous owners of the Arsenal No5 shirt.

Hincapie had worn No3 at Leverkusen for the past three full seasons - switching to it from No33 - and usually wears the same number for the Ecuador national team.

Fellow Arsenal summer signings Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, Noni Madueke, Cristhian Mosquera, Viktor Gyokeres and Eberechi Eze have opted for No13, No36, No16, No11, No3, No9, and No10 respectively after completing their moves.

Regarded as the final piece of the Gunners’ puzzle of a summer transfer window, Hincapie says the chance to win big trophies convinced him to make the switch.

He said: I’ve always watched Premier League games and saw Arsenal play. They’ve got an amazing manager as well as top-class players. I was convinced because they want to win big things and trophies.

“This was another motivation for me to come here.”
