Arsenal over-celebrate yet again and Postecoglou makes shock Kane claim as Spurs striker ‘lingers’

Arsenal celebrate like they've won the Premier League

Arsenal obviously ‘celebrated like they had won the league’, while Ange Postecoglou IS the manager of Spurs so is preparing with a Spurs player in mind.

There’s a party going on right here

‘This was the third time in seven years that Arsenal had won the Community Shield on penalties, and they celebrated like they had won the league – not least new £105million signing Declan Rice who could easily have ended up at City this summer and shone on his competitive debut’

They sure didn’t, Chris Wheeler of the Daily Mail. They sure didn’t. Great times.

Incredibly strong start on that front, mind. Good to get off the Arsenal over-celebrating mark in the first week of August.

Insult to injury time There is a strong CLAMPDOWN theme in the Community Shield final reporting, with new rules for the upcoming season implemented at Wembley by Stuart Attwell.

The referee gave out bookings to players for dissent and Mikel Arteta for leaving his technical area, with more injury time than usual added at the end of the second half.

This went down predictably well with fans, while leaving some journalists confused. Enter Ian Tuckey of The Sun:

But 11 minutes into added time – two more than allotted yet still two short of the finish – Trossard nipped in for a fierce low shot that veered in off City defender Manuel Akanji.

Eight minutes of added time was announced, so it was three ‘more than allotted’. But are we still struggling with the concept of it being a minimum amount of added time in 2023? And do we still have to pretend it’s a travesty when more time than that is played?

There was a long stoppage for Kyle Walker and Thomas Partey to be treated for head injuries. That time was added on at the end, precisely as it should be. Let’s not imply it came out of nowhere as some sort of conspiracy to give Arsenal time to equalise.

Hav that ‘Sublime Saliba silences Haaland as Havertz looks unnatural in new position’ – The Sun website.

That ‘new position’ is indeed the one he has played for a lot of his career, including quite often during a Champions League-winning campaign a couple of years ago.

Plus Havertz was actually alright.

Community theatre ‘THE NOTEBOOK: Erling Haaland’s curse continues, Mikel Arteta’s tactical switches keep his stars on their toes, and the Jeff Astle Foundation benefits from funds raised’ – MailOnline.

That Erling Haaland ‘curse’? He has now lost two consecutive Community Shield finals. Two! Consider yourself hexed, fella.

Do you have to let it linger? Daniel Levy has treated a reported deadline set by Bayern Munich to accept their latest offer for Harry Kane with predictable disdain, meaning the latest updates on the striker had to be derived from his four goals in a friendly win over Shakhtar Donetsk at the weekend, and his manager’s words afterwards.

‘Ange Postecoglou insists he IS planning for life with Harry Kane despite his lingering lap of honour after scoring four against Shakhtar Donetsk… as Tottenham boss hits out at Bayern Munich’s public pursuit,’ reads one MailOnline headline.

Ange Postecoglou insisting he is NOT planning for life with Harry Kane would be weird. The Tottenham manager probably is factoring the Tottenham striker into his plans, yeah.

And as for that ‘lingering lap of honour,’ Kane applauds the fans after every home game. Mediawatch would ask what made this example different but Matt Barlow literally just writes that Kane ‘performed a lingering lap of honour’ in his opening paragraph and then never mentions it again. Almost as if it wasn’t ‘lingering’ at all.

Plenty of others are at it, such as Tom Barclay of The Sun:

Kane, who captained Spurs against Shakhtar, applauded fans at full-time and waved to what appeared to be a family member in the stands. It sparked suggestions of a farewell, though the forward is known for doing exactly the same after other matches.

And The Athletic‘s Adam Crafton:

[Postecoglou] was asked about Kane’s performance, which he praised. He was asked about Kane waving at the crowd at the final whistle, which is something he often does, but this time he appeared to linger.

Already we have gone from ‘lingering’ to merely ‘appearing to linger’. He’ll be ‘set to linger’ next.

Even Dan Kilpatrick of Evening Standard fame gets in on the action:

Long story short: footballer does something he literally always does (scores loads of goals then claps fans) but it might mean something different this time, depending on if something happens. Not that we have any actual insight on that.

That’s Rich Barclay is certainly enjoying himself in The Sun:

HARRY KANE started for Tottenham in the friendly against Shakhtar Donetsk – but his potential replacement missed out.

Did Mediawatch miss Tottenham signing a striker?

But Richarlison, the man expected to step up if Kane does leave, was not in the squad to face Shakhtar due to a knock but is expected to return for Tuesday’s friendly in Barcelona.

Richarlison, the scorer of a single Premier League goal last season, is not ‘expected’ by anyone ‘to step up if Kane leaves’. But you already knew that.

Blush money Outside of trying to engineer another Kane transfer, the media’s favourite pastime this summer has been to quietly encourage the Harry Maguire pile-on.

It was evident in the reporting on his apparent scrap with Andre Onana and only continues with each day the centre-half dares to not be sold by Man Utd.

‘MANCHESTER UNITED ended their pre-season in less than desirable fashion after Harry Maguire’s blushes were spared by a last-gasp Facundo Pellistri strike,’ writes Tony Robertson in The Sun.

It was Maguire’s mistake which led to Man Utd conceding. As Robertson writes, the defender ‘was surrounded by light blue Athletico shirts’ but ‘decided to inexplicably try an outside of the boot pass’ which was intercepted.

That does rather make it sound like an ambitious switch rather than the five-yard ball Maguire was attempted but still.

However, Facundo Pellistri rescued United right at the death with a last-gasp equaliser. A long punt upfield from Wan-Bissaka was headed down by United’s afternoon villain Maguire before Pellistri popped up to steer the ball home in the final moments.

Oh, so Maguire assisted the equaliser? Sorry, ‘United’s afternoon villain Maguire’, to give him his full name.

It turns out Harry Maguire’s blushes were spared in large part thanks to Harry Maguire. And yes, Robertson spends the entirety of his match report typing out ‘Athletico’.

The Daily Mirror website picks up the baton with this:

DAY TO FORGET! Maguire woes continue with another mistake but Man Utd earn late draw in pre-season finale

They also say Pellistri ‘spared Maguire’s blushes’, although they quite impressively manage to make no mention of Maguire’s header to set the forward up. Awkward one to crowbar in, to be fair.
