The Swiss had been battling a sickness bug in the lead up to the game with nine players showing symptoms. The team still managed to go out and push a well-fancied Sweden side all the way in South Yorkshire.
When speaking to FAWSL Full-Time after the match, Wälti said that she was proud of her side’s efforts against Sweden after a challenging few days.
“I think we can be really proud of our performance tonight,” the Swiss captain said. “After what has happened in the last few days, we did everything that we could on the pitch.
“Yeah, in the end it wasn’t enough to get a draw but all-in-all, it’s something to build on for us.”
Switzerland must defeat The Netherlands on Matchday 3 to qualify for the quarter-finals and Wälti said that the team can take positives from this evening’s game.
She said “We’ve got nothing to lose, we go into that game as the underdogs and The Netherlands have all of the pressure on them.
“We have to play how we did today and hopefully, do enough to get the result next time.”
Switzerland’s final group match against The Netherlands takes place at Bramall Lane in Sheffield on Sunday evening.
