Gunners begin Premier League season at home to Wolves on Saturday

Having run Manchester City so close during the last two seasons, it will be fascinating to see if Mikel Arteta can get his side to go again.

There is little sign of decline at the Emirates Stadium of course but matching City’s relentless pursuit of excellence is perhaps the most difficult task in modern English football. Liverpool managed it but seemingly paid the price at times.

Still, Arsenal have been one of Europe’s elite teams and will have no doubt taken heart from the fact they remained unbeaten against Pep Guardiola’s side last season.

If they are to scale such a height, Arteta will need his full squad available. Though William Saliba remained fit and healthy last season, the Gunners boss saw what the absence of such a key player can do to a title challenge when the Frenchman missed the end of the 2022-23 campaign.

With that in mind, here’s a look at the latest Arsenal injuries ahead of their first game of the season at home to Wolves this weekend.

Jurrien Timber missed almost the entirety of last season after a sustaining a serious knee injury on his debut.

While the Dutchman made something of a comeback towards the end of the campaign, a slight foot injury disrupted some of his pre-season.

Luckily, however, Arteta confirmed that the former Ajax star would soon return to team training.

“It is fine,” he said.

“He’s been doing some individual work, that’s clear now and we expect him to be ready to train with the group in the next week because he has no reaction. Very positive.”

Potential return date: August 2024

Takehiro Tomiyasu

The news is less positive when it comes to Takehiro Tomiyasu, however,

The Japan international missed 13 games last season and Arteta confirmed after the win over Lyon on Sunday that the defender was expected to miss a few weeks of action.

“I think it will take weeks on that one, unfortunately, and poor Tomi because of everything that he does,” added the Gunners boss.

“But he’s going to have to be patient and work through it because I think it’s going to take a few weeks.”

Potential return date: Unknown

Fabio Vieira

Fabio Vieira was another who struggled with injury last season, missing 20 games in total.

The midfielder also sat out the win over Lyon in the Emirates Cup on Sunday through what football.london suggest is a “minor hip injury”.
