In the latter years of Arsène Wenger’s reign and throughout Unai Emery’s spell as Arsenal manager, Liverpool were a side that regularly defeated the Gunners.
When Jürgen Klopp arrived at Anfield, the Reds became an unstoppable force, and Arsenal consistently struggled in those meetings. Their record against the traditional top six was so poor that supporters would often dread the prospect of facing a direct rival.
Under Mikel Arteta, however, things have changed dramatically. Arsenal are now one of the strongest performers in head-to-head games against their top-six counterparts. While the Premier League title has so far eluded them, the Gunners have become one of the toughest sides to play against in England.
Liverpool is no longer the team Arsenal fear. Instead, Arteta’s men will travel to Anfield this weekend full of belief, knowing they have matched and often outperformed the Reds in recent seasons.

Liverpool’s own website notes that Klopp’s side have failed to win any of their last six Premier League matches against Arsenal. That run includes two Arsenal victories, with the other four ending in draws. It is a remarkable turnaround, highlighting the progress Arteta has overseen in restoring Arsenal’s competitiveness against elite opposition.
Still, Arsenal will be wary of complacency. Past results count for little once the whistle blows, and Liverpool remains a dangerous opponent, particularly at Anfield.
The Gunners will look to extend their unbeaten run against the Reds this weekend, but Arteta will no doubt remind his players that every game is a new battle and nothing can be taken for granted.
