Arsenal have officially completed the signing of defensive midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad.
The Premier League side opted against triggering Zubimendi’s €60 million release clause in one lump sum payment and will pay around €65 million, including add-ons, in installments.
Zubimendi is Arsenal’s second signing of the summer, following the arrival of goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
“This is a huge moment in my career,” the Spain international said via Arsenal’s website.
“It’s the move I was looking for and one I wanted to make. As soon as you set foot here, you realise how big this club and this team are.
“I set my sights on Arsenal because their style of play is a good fit for me. They have shown their potential recently, and the best is yet to come.”
Zubimendi was coveted by Liverpool last summer but opted to remain with Real Sociedad. The 26-year-old is a product of Sociedad’s academy and spent five years with the Basque club’s first team, making over 170 appearances.
He was also part of Spain’s Euro 2024 title-winning, notably shining in the final against England where he came on as a substitute for Rodri.
His move to the Emirates will see him link up with former Sociedad teammate Mikel Merino, who joined Arsenal one year ago.
Further midfield reinforcements are expected for Arsenal after they recently agreed a deal to sign Christian Norgaard from Brentford.
The Gunners are working on attacking additions at the moment, with Noni Madueke a leading target, and negotiations are expected to commence with Chelsea soon.
