Arsenal have agreed a deal to sign Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting Lisbon, finally reaching a resolution after weeks of back-and-forth negotiations.

The transfer, as reported by The Guardian, will cost up to €73.5 million in total, consisting of a €63.5 million base fee and €10 million in performance-related bonuses. Talks had stalled over the structure of those add-ons, with Sporting rejecting Arsenal’s initial proposals based on more ambitious targets. Both sides have now agreed on incentives tied to goals, assists, appearances, and Champions League qualification.

Medical expected within 24 hours

The Swedish striker, who scored 39 goals in the Portuguese league last season, is expected to undergo a medical within the next 24 hours. Arsenal already have a five-year contract in place and hope the 27-year-old can join their pre-season tour in Singapore as soon as possible.

Gyökeres had already skipped pre-season training with Sporting, and reports suggest his entourage had begun clearing out his home in Lisbon. His brother recently followed Arsenal on social media, hinting that a move was close even before the agreement was confirmed.

The drawn-out nature of the deal had sparked concern among Gooners, especially with Mikel Arteta’s squad flying out to Asia without a new centre-forward on board. The manager has made no secret of his desire for attacking reinforcements after another season of falling just short in the title race

A crucial addition to Arsenal’s frontline

Since joining Sporting, Gyökeres has scored 97 goals in just 102 appearances, underlining why Arsenal were determined to get the deal done. His arrival adds firepower to a squad that struggled to find consistency in front of goal last season and relied heavily on Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard for creativity.

The hope now is that the striker can join up with his new teammates quickly, giving him valuable time to settle in before the campaign begins. Arsenal fans will be eager to see if he can hit the ground running.
