Lautaro Martinez will start for Inter Milan for Roma tomorrow despite the Nerazzurri captain’s tough start to the season.
This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews.
Martinez is Inter’s captain.
The Argentine has been the Nerazzurri’s top scorer in each of the past three seasons.
Moreover, Martinez provides Inter with more than just goals. The 27-year-old has typically been the player who sets the tone for Inter’s performances with his linkup play and defensive workrate.
But at the start of this season, Martinez has looked some way from his best.
A big part of this has been a struggle for fitness on the part of the Argentine international.
Martinez was the last person to return to Inter’s preseason training. That was because he won the Copa America with Argentina, requiring a rest to recharge before preseason training.
Unfortunately, this meant that Martinez barely had a week to get up to speed before the Serie A season began.
Therefore, it was not too surprising that a lack of fitness has been evident in the Inter captain’s performances for much of the campaign.
Martinez only missed one match of the season so far. That was against Lecce in Inter’s second match of the campaign.
But even when he has played, the Argentine has lacked sharpness.
Nevertheless, the Corriere report, there is no doubt that Inter coach Simone Inzaghi will give Martinez the nod tomorrow.
There is a reason why Martinez wears the armband for the Nerazzurri.
And Inzaghi has full faith that the 27-year-old will get back to his free-scoring best soon.
Martinez has already gotten on the scoresheet this season. He scored a brace against Udinese, and then found the back of the net against Red Star Belgrade.
And tomorrow, Inzaghi is backing Martinez to have an impact against Roma.
