In an interview with today’s print edition of Corriere della Sera, Enrico Hoffer, an architect who was part of the most recent renovation of San Siro before the 1990 World Cup, has shared his hopes to see San Siro remain standing.
“Having contributed, I would be sorry to see it go. It is clear that my dream is that it remains intact,” he started before going on to question why reports have suggested the third tier and roof will need to go as part of potential renovation work.
“It is not clear to me why we need to remove the third tier. The third tier and the roof is all part of the image everyone has of San Siro. If we were to only save the Meazza from the second tier down, the emotional attachment would inevitably be lost.”
He then moved to insist that the current vibrations, which have led to part of San Siro being cordoned off, will not lead to the stadium collapsing.
“The vibrations do not mean that the stadium will collapse.”
“The clubs will have their reasons for wanting a new stadium but I continue to hope that San Siro will be saved. I think renovation is possible, but I don’t know if it is feasible from an economic point of view.”
