If you thought Ella Toone’s opening goal for England was the best the Women’s World Cup would produce on Wednesday, you were mistaken.
The Lionesses were 1-0 up and in control of Wednesday’s semi-final, with hosts Australia struggling to fashion any threatening chances.
But just after the hour mark, Matildas captain Sam Kerr – making her first start of the tournament after injury – took matters into her own hands.
The Chelsea striker picked up the ball just inside her own half and ran at England’s Millie Bright, before unleashing an unstoppable shot from 25 yards which flew past goalkeeper Mary Earps.
What a player Kerr is. That’s the goal of the tournament right there.
