Another victory in the first match of the year

Borussia Dortmund racked up their biggest win of the season in the first game of the year, but struggled for long spells against bottom club Darmstadt 98, and it was only the substitutes who ensured the victory in the final quarter of an hour. But the win was undoubtedly deserved: the xG of 2.83-0.51 was clearly in BVB's favour.

Barren spell over: After a six-match winless run in all competitions in December, Borussia Dortmund ended the first game after the winter break as victors.

Good starters: Borussia Dortmund have not lost the first Bundesliga game of a calendar year in 20 years, having racked up 15 wins and five draws in the first game of the year since January 2004.

Top subs: Youssoufa Moukoko has now scored 09 of his 14 Bundesliga goals as a substitute. Only Paco Alcacer has scored more substitute goals in BVB's history (12). BVB have scored the most substitute goals in the league along with Leipzig (eight). The most prolific substitute goalscorers in both of the last two seasons were Borussia players.

Goal in Darmstadt: After his first goal at the Böllenfalltor, Marco Reus has now scored at least one goal against 16 of the current 18 Bundesliga clubs – only Bochum and Heidenheim are missing. In total, he has scored against 25 clubs in the Bundesliga.

Sancho assists: Jadon Sancho immediately picked up a scorer point in the first match following his return (now a total of 84 goal involvements in 105 Bundesliga appearances: 38 goals, 46 assists). The last goal he assisted was also scored by Reus (16 May 2021 in Mainz).

Enforcers: The central defensive partnership of Emre Can and Nico Schlotterbeck won at least two thirds of their challenges.

Confident on the ball and fast: Ian Maatsen not only showed his tempo (33 sprints, the most of any player on the pitch, and the highest top speed of the match at 34km/h), but also had the best pass completion rate (93.8%).

Goal guarantee: There has always been at least one goal in each of the past 144 Bundesliga matches involving BVB – an ongoing historic record.

Top-scorer: 13 scorer points in 17 games in the first half-season is a strong record for Julian Brandt, who has never scored as many goals in the first half of a season as he has this term (six).

Younger BVB: With the 35-year-old Mats Hummels out injured and 34-year-old Marco Reus starting on the bench, Borussia started with their youngest starting XI of the season (26.7 years).

Homecoming: His last appearance for BVB was 966 days ago. Before his transfer to Manchester United, Jadon Sancho was brought on as a substitute in the 3-1 victory over Leverkusen on the last day of the 2020/21 season (22 May 2021).
